SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): BHP announced that it has signed an agreement with leading Chinese steelmaker HBIS Group, aimed at boosting efforts to lower carbon emissions from its blast furnaces.
As per agreement reached, the two parties will trial direct reduced iron (DRI) production, in addition to utilising BHP iron ores in blends so as to progress a separate enhanced lump stage 2 trial, thus lowering carbon emissions. The enhanced lump stage 2 trial will focus on the existing BF steelmaking route, by increasingly using direct charge lump, thus reducing carbon emissions. It must be noted that the use of agglomerated feed requires fossil fuel energy.

The trial of commercial-scale DRI production using BHP iron ores in blends will be carried out at HBIS’s newly commissioned DRI plant. The collaboration will evaluate the performance of the DRI in downstream steelmaking processes.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties in 2021 calls for investment of up to $15 million over a period of three years.
Commenting on the collaboration, Mike Henry, Chief Executive, BHP said that its actions coupled with joint efforts with customers like HBIS Group is aimed at accelerating the progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions along the entire value chain.
