It must be noted that the U.S. Department of Commerce had recently lifted the countervailing duty rate on Canadian softwood lumber imports from 6.74% to 14.63%.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. decision to quadruple taxes on Canadian softwood lumber imports has been denounced by the major trade associations that represent the forestry industry in British Columbia.
Both the BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI) and the BC Lumber Trade Council (BCLTC) released comments condemning the U.S. action. According to both trade associations, the duties are detrimental and unwarranted. They added that the increased tariffs will raise prices for American homebuilders while penalizing businesses and employees in the wood and forestry sector.
Notably, the countervailing tax rate on Canadian softwood lumber imports was recently reduced from 6.74% to 14.63% by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The softwood lumber now faces a total tariff of up to 35.19% when the 20.56% anti-dumping duties are added.
In order to protect Canadian interests through all available legal avenues, BCLTC stated that it will keep up its close collaboration with the federal government and industry partners. Kurt Niquidet, president of the BCLTC, asked the U.S. administration and the Canadian government to cooperate in order to find a solution.
The president and CEO of COFI, Kim Haakstad, stated that increasing the competitiveness of the forestry sector in British Columbia inside Canada is necessary to lessen the negative effects of the tariffs.
