e-cycleNYC to expand e-scrap collection and recycling to more boroughs

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced that the curbside e-scrap collection pilot program introduced earlier in Staten Island will now be expanded to more boroughs in the months and years to come. It must be noted that the free ‘e-cycleNYC’ electronics waste collection and recycling service is being provided by DSNY in partnership with Fresno, California-headquartered ERI. Following the success of the pilot effort launched in October last year, DSNY has decided to make the service permanent in Staten Island. Further, similar service will be rolled out into more parts of the city in next three years. Accordingly, Brooklyn will start the service this fall.

In a press meeting, Mayor de Blasio noted that the state targets to recycle everything in a bid to achieve its zero-waste goal. The expansion of the e-scrap recycling services to more boroughs will help it to move one step closer. He highlighted that the e-waste pilot project launched in Staten Island was a huge success.

DSNY Commissioner Kathryn Garcia stated that the Department is thrilled with the support it received from Staten Island residents. The overwhelming support to the pilot program has forced the DSNY to make it permanent in Staten Island and to expand the services so as to make it available to more number of residents over the next few years.

Meantime, John Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of ERI stated that ERI is honored to be part of the successful e-waste recycling program. Further, he noted that ERI is committed to continue its partnership with Staten Island and the great city of New York. ERI is committed in its efforts to contribute towards responsible recycling of the world’s fastest growing waste stream, in a bid to keep toxic and harmful chemicals out of New York landfills.

DSNY had recently announced that e-cycleNYC electronics recycling program reached an important milestone by collecting 10 million pounds of used electronics. Also, 2.3 million residents have access to e-cycleNYC, it noted.

Started in 2013, e-cycleNYC program collects unwanted electronics from apartment buildings with more than 10 units. The collected electronics are recycled by ERI in compliance with highest industry standards. The program accepts wide range of electronic devices such as televisions, VCRs, DVRs, DVD players, cable and satellite boxes, video game consoles, computers, small servers, monitors, laptops and peripherals, printers, scanners, fax machines, small electronics including tablets, mobile phones and MP3 players. The public-private partnership between the Department and ERI is fully funded by electronics manufacturers and is offered free-of-cost to residents and participating buildings.

e-cycleNYC program offers three service options, depending on the size of building. Buildings with 10-99 rooms are provided with a secure, enclosed area for storing their used electronics, which will be collected at regular intervals. Buildings with 100 or more units are provided with storage bins, which are available in small and large sizes. In addition, it conducts outdoor electronics recycling events to collect e-scrap from residents of buildings with 250 or more units.
