About Yard

Seneca Landfill is a cutting-edge facility serving the needs of customers throughout Western Pennsylvania and Ohio by accepting a wide range of non-hazardous waste. But that's just the beginning of what we do for our clients and our community.

Seneca Landfill is a state-of-the-art facility serving the needs of customers throughout Western Pennsylvania and Ohio by accepting a wide range of non-hazardous waste. The landfill was designed with full environmental integrity. That means peace of mind for customers facing the challenges of waste disposal management and the facility’s neighbors. The development of Seneca Landfill started long before earth-moving equipment arrived. A team of professionals conducted a comprehensive survey of the landfill’s potential impact. Their findings formed the foundation of the design and construction of the landfill.

Founded by Edward L. and Margaret Vogel in 1958 with a single truck, Vogel Holding, Inc. has grown to become one of the largest independent providers of waste collection, recycling, and disposal services in Western PA. They have stayed viable and thrived as an independent company by becoming innovators in their field and by branching out into different facets so they could remain self-sufficient. In addition to waste services, Vogel provides recycling and specialty services through its family of affiliated companies. The Vogel companies employ over 550 people in Western PA and Eastern Ohio and consist of: four (4) full-service container and waste hauling companies, three (3) municipal/residual waste transfer facilities, one (1) municipal/residual waste landfill, one (1) facility for the processing and beneficial reuse of wood waste, one (1) surveying company, and one (1) recycling facility.

Preliminary studies completed before the opening of Seneca Landfill included, but were not limited to:

  • Geologic tests to determine the stability of the site to withstand and support construction.
  • Hydrogeologic studies to ensure the integrity of area public and private drinking water sources.
  • Soils analyses on the proper quality and quantities of soils for daily cover and eventual closure and revegetation of the facility.
  • Traffic studies on the flow of vehicles to the facility with minimal impact on the community.
  • Historical research to preserve and maintain any potential artifacts or archeological finds.
  • Inventories of fish, wildlife, and plants to prevent destruction of natural habitats and preserve endangered species.
  • Demographic overviews to provide for sufficient disposal capacity for the host municipalities and surrounding counties.
  • Consideration of the visual and environmental impact on nearby rivers, watersheds, wetlands and other waterways.

Seneca Landfill is an industry leader in its use of a dual composite 80 mil HDPE liner system coupled with other geotextile and synthetic drainage material. Together with a series of groundwater monitoring wells, leachate collection and detection wells, a gas collection system, and a fully operational leachate treatment plant, Seneca Landfill is a comprehensive state-of-the-art facility. The liner system exceeds all federal and state design specifications. Seneca Landfill is designed to provide long-term environmental protection.Environmental issues and regulations have increasingly become the driving forces for those responsible for waste disposal management decisions in all types of businesses. Consequently, the need to remain in compliance with local, state and federal laws has made evaluating one’s disposal options more complex, requiring familiarity with those issues and regulations, as well as their potential economic and environmental impact.

Beyond the collection and storage of waste, Seneca Landfill uses state-of-the-art technology to convert the landfill's methane gas into renewable energy. When choosing a facility to manage your waste, the decision you make today will seriously impact tomorrow for your business and your community. When that decision becomes your responsibility, you need to turn to a company with an absolute commitment to the environment. You need a facility designed with complete integrity. And you need a facility operated by a team of experienced management and operating personnel. You need Seneca Landfill, Inc..

Why Recycle?

With our on-site recycling collector, we are able to divert thousands of pounds of recyclable materials from Seneca Landfill. Recycling helps ensure that plastics, metals and paper materials are able to be reused, thus reducing the need to extract and consume raw natural resources. Recycling also saves valuable space in the landfill. As part of the Vogel family of companies, our sister company transports the recyclable materials to a sorting facility, where the recyclable materials are appropriately sorted and prepared for reuse.
