U.S. Raw Steel Output Soared 47%

U.S. Raw Steel Output Soared 47%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 47.1% during the week ending on May 15, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is with reference to the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.799 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 79.2%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.223 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 54.6% during the corresponding week in 2020. Meantime, the weekly crude steel production increased marginally by 1.4% over the week. The domestic steel mills had recorded production of 1.774 million NT during the week ended May 8, 2021.

The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 33.888 million NT through the week ending on May 15, 2021. This is up by 7.3% from the production which had totalled 31.588 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded significant surge from 69.9% to 77.5% over the year.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 767,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 616,000 net tons during the week. The North East and Midwest regions recorded output of 151,000 net tons and 187,000 net tons respectively, whereas the Western region clocked the lowest output of 78,000 net tons.
