Total, UNITAR Signs New Agreement to Boost Plastic Recycling in Nigeria

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Total E&P Nigeria Limited and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) signed a Special Purpose Grant (SPG) agreement, aimed at saving the environment by reducing plastic pollution.

The agreement was signed in April at Lagos, Nigeria. Mr Vincent Nnadi, Executive General Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, Total represented the company at the signing ceremony, whereas UNITAR was represented by Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary General Executive Director.

As part of the agreement, an implementation committee managed by UNITAR will oversee the development of a full-cycle recycling plant, which will be located in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The partnership expects the plant to be constructed within two years. Furthermore, the two-year project is expected to create employment in the region and unfold a bundle of opportunities to small and medium-scale enterprises, along with ensuring environmental protection by boosting plastic recycling.

Nicolas Terraz, Managing Director, Total E&P Nigeria hoped that the project will bring significant turnaround to Nigerian recycling sector and create jobs at every step of the value chain. Meantime, Lawrence Boms, Country Head & Resident Representative of UNITAR noted that the partnership with Total will result in implementation of specific projects aimed at saving the planet from plastic pollution.
