SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Telecom major Zain Bahrain aims to up the ante of its e-waste recycling initiative by setting more complex challenges.
The ongoing e-waste management program promises to deliver eco-friendly recycling of all discarded electronic waste in the country. The program, a part of the company’s corporate social responsibility program, is being implemented in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) and Crown Industries.
The company’s headquarters in Seef District has a huge drop-off box for employees to drop off their unwanted or discarded end-of-life electronics. Within almost a week after its installation, the box has reported collection of approximately 1.5 tons of e-waste including mobile phones, printers, home and kitchen appliances, computers, circuit boards etc., These e-waste are collected by Crown Industries and are sent to different parts of the world for environment-friendly recycling in accordance with internationally accepted norms.

The SCE plans to organize an interschool competition, which in turn will reward the schools with highest e-waste collection, best awareness campaign and best digital solution. This is towards encouraging secondary and high school students to be a part of the innovative e-waste recycling initiative.
Zain Bahrain reminded that recycling will help to eliminate the harmful impacts of improper e-waste disposal. Also, it urged the government to formulate a comprehensive law on e-waste management in tackling the growing e-waste in the region.
