Sappi Europe Boosted Efforts to Cut Carbon Emissions at Kirkniemi Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sappi- the global diversified woodfibre company announced investment of Euro 10 million in Kirkniemi Mill in Lojha, Finland. The proposed investment is likely to reduce the mill’s direct fossil greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 230,000 tons of carbon dioxide per annum, by way of switching its energy sourcing to renewable energy. The project is expected to be completed in early 2023.

The project will further boost the company’s decarbonisation efforts. Incidentally, the company aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2025. It will help Sappi to exit coal as the fuel type, which will be replaced with biomass. The investment will install the equipment required to receive, store and handle wood biomass for biofuel production.

Martti Savelainen, Director, Kirkniemi Mill noted that the reduction of use of fossil fuels by shifting to renewable energy will scale up its commitment to climate action. Such investments are critical to change its emission trajectory and dependency on fossil fuels, he added.

The Sappi Kirkniemi Mill has a production capacity of approximately 750,000 tons of high quality publication papers as well as 300,000 tons per annum of bleached mechanical pulp for own consumption. The mill employs nearly 550 industry professionals.
