worldsteel Published Steel Industry Safety and Health Data Report 2024

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced publication of its 2024 Safety and Health in the Steel Industry Data Report for 2024. The report offers insights into the steel industry’s ongoing commitment to safety and well-being of its workforce during the previous year.

According to the report, worldsteel’s members reported 61 fatalities globally in 2023. This represents a global fatal frequency rate (FFR) of 0.017, the lowest on record. Although the lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) has risen slightly to 0.76 from 0.65 last year, it continued to remain below historical levels. In 2023, 95% of sites made use of the Potential serious injuries and fatalities (PISF) framework.

The total recordable injury frequency rate increased from 3.75 in 2022 to 4.75 in 2023. The report suggests that more must be done to improve contractor management systems, to improve reporting and to better manage and reduce the risks faced by contractors. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of conducting thorough incident investigations and implementation of necessary preventive measures.

The main causes of lost time injury in 2023 were identified as use of manual tools, slipping, moving machinery, falling objects and falling from height.
