Nordic Paper to Stop Pulp Production at Saffle Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nordic Paper announced its decision to discontinue the production of pulp at its Saffle plant in Sweden during the last quarter of the current year. Thereafter, the company will replace it with purchased external pulp, said company press release.

The decision to stop production is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. It will reduce the consumption of fossil fuels at the plant to less than half of the current levels. The announcement of the decision comes upon conclusion of consultations with various trade unions.

The Nordic Paper Saffle plant now comprises two paper machines that produce natural greaseproof papers, which are primarily used as baling papers and in baking cup applications. The annual paper production capacity at the plant will witness around 10% surge, as a result of the measure. The decision will also result in notable reduction in the climate impact of the mill facility. The other benefit of the move is direct reduction in emission to air and water, the company noted.

The fixed costs at the mill would be reduced by nearly SEK 30-40 million. Furthermore, it will lead to 20 job cuts at the mill.
