SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canadian mining giant Newmont Corporation announced that its Musselwhite mine in northern Ontario has completed 25 years of commercial production. The celebration to mark the milestone was held 20th September, which was attended by several guests including employees, community members and leaders, government officials and business partners.
The mine had achieved initial commercial production in April 1997. Since then, the mine has produced more than five million ounces of gold. During the previous year, the mine had provided employment to 737 people and contributed approximately $320,000 to the welfare of nearby indigenous communities.
Mark Rodgers, SVP for North America, Newmont applauded the 25-year achievement of Musselwhite mine. He extended congratulations to all employees, Indigenous community members and partners that were involved in the long journey. The mine demonstrates the value of the Northwestern Ontario mining jurisdictions and reinforces the commitment made by all towards safe and responsible mining, he added.
The Musselwhite mine is one of the largest gold mines in Canada and has estimated reserves of approximately 2.29 million ounces.
