Dow Calls for Boosted Efforts to End Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading plastic producer, Dow highlighted the need to boost efforts to end plastic pollution, notwithstanding the fact that plastics are essential to the modern world, said Jim Fitterling, the Chair and CEO of the company. The real challenge is to preserve the huge benefits of plastics while eliminating pollution.

The announcement comes just ahead of the INC-4 intergovernmental meeting too be held in Ottawa, Canada to formulate a global treaty towards ending plastic pollution.

He extended the company’s support to any potential solution that would eliminate plastic pollution from the planet. All stakeholders need to jointly work towards creation of a socially inclusive, circular economy for plastics.

The top priority must be in designing products using latest innovations. The key is to design high-performance plastics that consume fewer raw materials, while ensuring durability, reusability and recyclability.

Secondly, Dow chief emphasized on the need promote and scale up environmentally sound recycling techniques, which could lead to substantial reduction of plastic waste. At the same time, traditional mechanical recycling methods to transform waste, must be preserved, wherever necessary.

As a third priority, a new model to power a circular plastics economy needs to be built and developed.
