Lagos, Nigeria Continues to Fight the Menace of Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Nigerian state of Lagos has been waging a difficult battle against plastic pollution. The ongoing attempts by the state authorities have not been able to address the issue on a large scale. It must be noted that the country’s recycling industry is worth over $2 billion.

As per rough estimates, Lagos State generates approximately 870,000 tonnes of plastic waste every year. The state has been indulged in several campaigns, mainly through the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, to fight against plastic pollution. Despite this, several regions of the state are still littered with rubbish, of which plastic bags and PET bottles form the majority. The plastic pollution still continues to pose serious health hazards to its residents and threat to its environment.

Femi Idowu-Adegoke, President of the Lagos Recyclers Association attributed the rising plastic pollution to lack of willingness on the part of residents to adopt recommended waste disposal practices as prescribed by the Authorities. The indiscriminate disposal of waste by residents has all foiled attempts by authorities, he added.

The state authorities called for attitudinal change in residents, so as to try to totally eliminate the use of disposable plastics.
