KAB Announces Launch of 2017 Recycle-Bowl Recycling Competition

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The national non-profit organization Keep America Beautiful (KAB) has announced the launch of its 7th Annual Recycle-Bowl recycling competition. The competition aims to promote waste-reduction activities and encourage recycling habits among elementary, middle and high school students across the US.

The national K-12 competition is designed to invigorate student participation in recycling by establishing new recycling programs within schools and improving recycling rates in those schools who are already involved in recycling programs. It also provides educational opportunities for both teachers as well as students.

The registration for the competition is already open. The registration window will remain open until Friday, October 13, 2017 midnight. The competition will be held for a four-week period starting from Monday, October 16, 2017 to Wednesday November 15, 2017. Participants will have one-month period to report data. The verification of data will be conducted by January 2018 and the winners will be announced by March 2018.

The competition has three division categories, where students from schools can participate. The schools that intend to track recyclable materials generated within the school only could participate in the ‘School Division’. Those schools that collect materials from school as well as its surrounding community including individuals, groups, organizations home or businesses must compete in the ‘Community Division’. Whole school districts that are unable to break out recycling data for each individual school can compete against other school districts under the ‘District Division’. The competition will also crown champions in Waste Reduction and Food Scrap Collection.

The accepted materials include cafeteria materials such as Aluminum beverage containers, Cartons (milk and juice), Glass bottles and jars, Plastic bottles and tubs, Steel food cans and paper materials such as books, Chipboard, cardboard, magazines, newspaper, office paper and phone books. It must be noted that Food scraps will not be acceptable. Meantime, appliances, computers, construction and demolition materials, electronics, furniture, industrial plastics, pallets, scrap metal, yard trimmings and other miscellaneous recyclable items cannot be collected as part of the competition.

Nearly 700,000 students and teachers from around 1,300 schools across the US had competed in the 2016 Recycle-Bowl competition. A total of 3.2 million pounds of recoverable were collected during the event.
