Caribbean Island Nation Imposes Plastic Bag Ban

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Caribbean island nation of Jamaica announced move against plastics, in an attempt to curb pollution. Beginning January 1, 2019, the use of single-use plastic bags, plastic straws and styrofoam containers will be banned in the country. The government has already initiated assistance measures to companies so as to make the transition smoother. Incidentally, the country’s environment policy outlines measures to protect environment and promote sustainable use of natural resources.

Accordingly, it will be illegal to import, manufacture or distribute plastic bags that are smaller than 24 by 24 inches. However, bags used to package raw meat, flour, rice, sugar and baked items will be excluded from the ban. The government urged its citizens to switch to reusable carrier bags.

Starting next year, plastic straws attached to juice boxes and drink pouches will be banned in the country, with special exemption being granted to medical sector. Although styrofoam ban is also slated to commence next year, importers and manufacturers are provided with an option to apply for two-year extension.

In addition to impacts caused to its environment, the government decision is also based on fears that the country may likely see huge drop in tourists due to litter. This will result in loss of millions of dollars to Jamaican economy. Incidentally, tourism along with mining is the leading earner of foreign exchange.
