ISRI Focuses on the Essential Role of Recycling in the U.S. Economy

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) focused on the essential role played by the U.S. recycling industry on the country’s economy, as it celebrated America Recycles Day on November 15, 2021. Incidentally, the industry supports over 506,000 jobs and contributes approximately $117 billion to the U.S. economy.

In a briefing, Robin Wiener, President, ISRI noted that the occasion acknowledges all the people in the recycling industry, who strive hard to give new life to old items. The industry is faced with several challenges including bottlenecks in the supply chain, which has now been exacerbated due to Covid-19 situation.

Wiener noted that the recycling industry played key role by keeping manufacturing lines open towards production of critical goods needed for the Covid-19 response and recovery, even during the toughest times of the pandemic.

The ISRI had played a key role in collaborating with Congressmen in formulating the RECYCLE Act, which is included in the Infrastructure Bill recently signed into law by President Biden. It provides $75 million towards public education and awareness, which in turn will reduce contamination in the residential recycling stream. ISRI looks forward to work with policymakers and all stakeholders to achieve goals for a greener future, Wiener added.
