Foreign steel outpours in U.S ports

WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster): The port of Huston is straining under the import of Galvalume sheets,  galvanized steel and cold rolled steel.  The warehouse manager of Port Houston warehouses, said that all the warehouses, including docker stevedore warehouses and public warehouses were completely filled out.

Many longstanding import customers were turned down by the warehouses, as the inside storages were also filled. Inside storages are mainly used to fill specialty materials and weather sensitive metals. Even though the Houston port is the most congested, other ports like Savannah port is also filled. The sudden rush of import goods is due to the increase in tonnage of the regular customers.

According to the reports from Port Houston from June to July 2014 there have 43% increase in the imported steel department. The most important reason of the problems faced due to storage facility is the unavailability of trucks to move the goods from the warehouses. Moreover, the moving equipments are also priced very high. This problem is being faced at Savannah and North Orleans also.

Lack of transportation facility is also causing delay in deliveries. Many plants have already shut down due to the unavailability of raw materials from the port.

The customers used to get their raw materials directly from the inventories when Port Houston used to have one. But since the delivery system has come into the practice the customers never get their steel on time.
