SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The data from most recent research conducted by DS Smith indicates that younger generations in the UK lacks confidence in understanding what and how to recycle, when compared to older people.
Among all age groups surveyed, Gen Z were found to possess the least confidence with regards to recycling. According to the survey, 81% of the younger generation are less confident on what packaging can be recycled. Only 66% of the population over 55 years expressed lack of confidence on recycling of packaging. Around 11% does not know where to find advice on recycling, as compared with 4% of over 55s.

Nearly 67% of the respondents from Gen Z blamed barriers to recycling in the UK, compared to 41 per cent of over 55s. 63% of Gen Z stated that recycling labels on packaging are hard to understand. Almost one-fifth noted confusion over what recyclable items go into which bins as another issue. Also, 16% pointed at lack of adequate recycling bins.
The survey highlighted the need for changes to the UK recycling infrastructure to improve recycling among the younger generation.
Rogier Gerritsen, Managing Director, DS Smith Recycling said that it is high time for the sector to re-think its approach to recycling. He called for continued collaboration between policy makers, authorities and the recycling sector to boost recycling infrastructure and to make recycling easily accessible to consumers.
