Domtar Corp. Update Reveals Remarkable Progress Towards 2020 Sustainability Goals

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Domtar Corporation, in an update to 2017 report, has announced that the company has either met or exceeded three out of the total six 2020 sustainability goals. The update also highlights the ongoing sustainability initiatives that have helped the company achieve the goals two years ahead of the deadline.

According to Domtar, it had set the goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from purchased energy at its paper and pulp mills by 15%, when compared with 2010 levels. It has already surpassed the goal by achieving 18% reduction, mainly aided by switching six of its power boilers from coal to natural gas.

As part of its 2020 goal, the company had announced to develop a model for efficient measurement and strategic management of full cost of consumed water. The model was successfully developed in 2018, for which pilot studies were conducted at five mills over the past two years. The other mills are likely to witness implementation of water cost assessment model during the current year, Domtar said.

The share of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified fiber in the total fiber procured for use by Domtar pulp and paper mills increased to 22% in 2018, surpassing the 2020 goal of 20%. The company is further committed to increase forest certification in wood procurement regions, the update noted.

The update noted that the company is well on track to achieve its remaining goals. The recordable safety incident rate has dropped to 0.78, as compared with the goal of 0.50. The incident rate has achieved 55% reduction since 2008. On its journey to implementing EarthChoice Ambassadors (ECA) program in all of its facilities, it has expanded access of the program to 76% of company facilities. Also, the total waste sent to landfills has reduced by 36%, upon comparison with 2013 levels. The goal is to achieve 40% reduction by 2020.

Sustainability is an integral part of the company’s long-term growth strategy, said John D. Williams, president and CEO, Domtar Corporation.
