Court Orders Jail Sentence to Brothers Accused in E-Waste Fraud

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Birmingham Crown Court has ordered jail sentences to two brothers for their involvement in electronic waste fraud in connection with Weeelight producer compliance scheme.

The Court found that Jamil Rehman, director at Electronic Waste Specialists Ltd (EWS) submitted false documents claiming that it had recycled approximately 10,600 tonnes of electronic waste. By doing so, the company received a total payment of £1.48 million from Weeelight Ltd.over the two-year period from 2011 to 2012. As per contract with Weeelight, EWS was acknowledged as an authorized treatment facility under the producer compliance scheme.

The fraud was unveiled when Environment Agency’s National Investigations Team came across forged paperwork.

Jamil Rehman was sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in custody. Further, he was disqualified from acting as a company director for a period of 10 years.  His brother Saleem, who was pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of money from the company, received a 16-month custodial sentence suspended for two years.
