SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Bellingham, WA-headquartered BC Recycling announced that it has withdrawn the application to build a new metal shredder facility. The company had planned to build the shredder on Marine Drive waterfront, just outside the city limits. The withdrawal id further to concerns raised by the community about the company’s environmental stewardship.

The Port of Bellingham had terminated its lease with the company in March this year on account of allegations about environmental wrongdoings. As per port authorities, ABC Recycling violated the lease terms by adding to heavy metal content in stormwater, illegally dropping scrap metal into the Whatcom Waterway and docking a ship in an unauthorized location.
The company has been granted time until end-June this year to remove piles of scrap metal from the port’s shipping terminal.
Meantime, ABC Recycling challenged the allegations, saying that recent environmental monitoring was unable to find pollution indicators while loading of scrap metal by the company. The tests had concluded that everything was within acceptable limits, noted Riley Sweeney, Community Relations Manager at ABC Recycling. However, Sweeney declined to comment on the company’s decision to scrap the Marine Drive shredder project.
