Closed Loop Partners Launch Fresh Initiative to Reinvent Single-Use Plastic Bags

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Closed Loop Partners announced formation of a new consortium that aims to explore single-use plastics bag design and suggest alternatives for them.

The ‘Beyond the Bag Initiative’ is being led by Walmart, Target, and CVS Health. The three companies will together put in $15 million in the project, which is part of Closed Loop Partners’ Center for the Circular Economy. The other companies to sign up with the initiative include Kroger and Walgreens. As part of the initiative, the partners invited innovative ideas from entrepreneurs and inventors to replace billions of single-use plastic bags consumed in the U.S. every year.

The three partners have tried with plastic bag alternatives before also, but these efforts had ended unsuccessful. The new initiative will give priority to reusable bags or bags made from alternative materials. The primary importance will be for possible options that promises inclusion of greater recycled plastic content and also for those which proposes rapidly biodegradable and compostable solutions.

The three-year initiative looks to bring in additional retailers to its fold. The ideas obtained during this period will be developed and tested so as to deliver a solution that guarantees industry-wide acceptance.
