California Metal theft bill signed into law

RICHMOND (Scrap Monster): The AB-2312 Metal theft law has been signed into law by Californian Governor Jerry Brown on September 26th. The bill sponsored by Assemblyman Brian Nestande had earlier received bipartisan support from the California State Senate and California Assembly.

According to the law, the recycler must subscribe to theft alert notifications system. The system maintained by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) will provide alerts on any reported stolen items within 100 miles of their business. The theft alert system is being implemented to prevent the purchase of stolen metals. Law enforcement authorities and non-ISRI members will be offered the web-based theft alert system free of cost.

The bill aims to deter incidents of metal theft by preventing easy sale of stolen items.

Local law enforcement agencies are encouraged to report thefts to the theft alert system maintained by the ISRI so that persons using that system receive timely and thorough information regarding metal thefts.
