AISI Says U.S. Raw Steel Output Soared 7%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel production surged higher significantly by nearly 7% over the previous year.

According to American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the country’s raw steel production totaled 1.903 million net tons (NT) during the week ending on April 20, 2019. The weekly production climbed higher by 6.9% when compared with the same week a year before, when production had totaled only 1.780 million NT. The capability utilization rate of mills too was up from 76% to 81.8%.

The year-to-date production through April 20, 2019 totaled 29.954 million net tons, higher by 6.9% upon comparison with the production of 28.033 million net tons during the corresponding period in 2018. The capability utilization rate surged higher significantly from 76.4% to 81.9% over the year.

The production in the Great Lakes region totaled 741,000 net tons, accounting for almost 40% of the total weekly production. The raw steel output by other regions in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East (186), Midwest (186), Southern (720) and Western (70).
