AISI Posted Notable Dip in Steel Shipments

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly steel shipment data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable decline during the month of February this year compared with the same month a year before. Also, the shipments registered substantial decline over the previous month.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 6.735 million net tons in February 2021. This is significantly down by 13.3% from the shipments of 7.772 million net tons in the same month in 2020. The shipments during the month recorded notable decline by 9.2% from the prior month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.421 million net tons in January this year.

The report provides month-on-month comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products. The shipments of cold rolled sheets slipped the most, falling by nearly 10% from the prior month. The shipments of hot rolled sheet recorded a decline by 9%, whereas those of hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip witnessed 7% month-on-month decline.

The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 14.156 million net tons during the initial two-month period of the year. This is down significantly by 13.2% when matched with the corresponding period a year before. The steel shipments by mills had totalled 16.307 million net tons during Jan-Feb ’20.
