About Company

Mr. John "Russell" Wilson established Wilson Welding Service, Inc. in 1954. We consider ourselves to be a community service company, whose reputation precedes us.We offer general welding, heliarc and aluminum services for residential, handrail, pipe, and structural projects. In addition, we offer complete portable services and can come to your location. Our certified welders are ASME qualified in steel, stainless steel and aluminum with testing performed by Law Engineering. We are the only company to have a 6Gr qualified aluminum welder in the state of Georgia and have been contracted throughout the United States for weld repairs and fabrication projects. Our 20,000 square foot facility, located in Decatur, Georgia, has 11 bays equipped with operational services that include all types of welding, steel, steel fabrication, metal forming and equipment repairs. Since our opening, we have expanded our facility to include precision machining with a lathe capacity of 22" x 96".At Wilson Welding Service, Inc., all customers are provided with top quality craftsmanship backed by over 50 years experience.

Aluminum & Stainless

Unlike many of our competitors, we take a project management approach with every fabricating project to ensure quality is achieved at each step of the fabrication process. From conception to final product, we work with our customers throughout the project to ensure they are kept apprised of its progress, and also to ensure that technical precision is achieved and all specifications are met. This dedicated approach with every fabricating project instills confidence in our customers that their project will be managed with a high degree of professionalism.

Custom Fabrication

Custom metal fabrication is a specialized skill that requires a lot of practice, experience and knowledge. Most of the commercial building projects use custom metal fabrication to get the exact final steel products they are looking for.

Price of Metal Fabrication

Skilled metal fabricators can be hard to find because they're highly in demand. In many commercial warehouses and industrial workplaces, majority of structural support is given by steel, therefore we spend a lot of time planning and analyzing to ensure safety and security of the outcome. For these kinds of projects, avoid the temptation to go for the cheapest price in town, but rather select a reputable fabricator like Wilson Welding.

Metal bending and forming

Machines like hydraulic press brakes are generally used to perform metal forming. This process is carried out with shaped dies and mandrels which help to bend tubular sections without twisting them. Rolling machines are commonly used to convert a plate steel into a round section.

Plasma/Water Jet Cutting

The process involves a plasma torch used to cut varied thickness of metal, especially steel with a high level of accuracy. With the help of a combination of inert gas and electricity, a high powered stream of pressure is created which is capable of melting metal and concurrently blowing it away just before it can dry into the cut. We can transform your ideas into products by the process of bending, milling, cutting, drilling, turning, grinding and threading. These types of metal fabricated products include small paper clips to large industrial parts that are made using CNC milling and turning machines.

Arc welding defects

Most welds contain defects (porosity, cracks, slag inclusions, etc.). The question is to determine if they are significant considering the application. Typically, the applicable codes or standards specify the maximum allowable limits of these types of defects in a weld based on the application. Sometimes discontinuities that may not affect mechanical properties may reduce corrosion performance. The properties of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) are one of the significant factors to consider when evaluating the soundness of the weld joint. The HAZ may be considered as a discontinuity because of the metallurgical alterations as a result of the welding heat, which causes very rapid heating and cooling rates. Grain growth, phase transformations (i.e. brittle untempered martensite which can form depending on the cooling rate and the chemical composition of the base material), formation of precipitates or overaging (loss of strength in precipitation-hardened alloys) all has a drastic effect on the properties of the HAZ. It is possible to improve the weld zone properties by controlling the cooling rate. This may be accomplished by slowing the cooling rate down either by increasing the heat input or preheating (i.e. heating the metal up before welding).

Porosity

Gas pockets are formed in the weld metal when they are entrapped during solidification. Molten steel readily absorbs hydrogen, carbon monoxide and other gases to which it is exposed. Since these are not soluble in solid metal, they are expelled as the metal solidifies. Standard shielded arc electrodes with organic coating such as E6010 produce an atmosphere around the arc that contains hydrogen, a notable contributor to porosity. When using such electrodes, welding should be done slowly to allow the gases time to escape since too high of a travel speed causes rapid solidification of the weld metal leading to porosity. Weld joint cleanliness is also crucial in avoiding porosity since moisture, oil, paint, or rust on the base metal may also cause porosity by introducing oxygen or hydrogen into the weld metal. Employing some minimum preheat temperature is often useful to remove condensation. It is also necessary to maintain the fluxes and the coated electrodes dry to avoid moisture pick-up. They are typically kept in an oven at approximately 250ºF, or if the hermetic seal is broken on the containers then the consumables (e.g. welding rods) should be baked at higher temperatures to drive off the moisture and restore the low hydrogen characteristics.
