Our History

Shuttleworth, Inc. was founded by Jim Shuttleworth. Jim Shuttleworth's father, Charles, was a tomato grower. In 1938, Charles started a canning operation. Jim worked in his father's company from a very young age. When he was about 13, he and his father developed a piece of machinery called the “Can Unscrambler.” It allowed cans to be fed into it and then would spin them out one-by-one. Demand for the machine increased and, as a sideline to the family's canning business, regular production of the equipment began in 1952. This business did well enough to afford Jim the opportunity to attend Purdue University, but while only a freshman, he was afflicted with a very serious injury from a terrible tractor accident. Jim was able to finish his mechanical engineering degree at Purdue, but when he was only 22 years old his father passed away. Having gone through these events at such a young age made Jim a very serious young man who would assume some major responsibilities.

When Jim was 25 years old, the company was sold to Hunt Foods. With his savings, Jim bought the machinery part of the canning business. He named the business “Shuttleworth Machinery Corporation” and moved it to Huntington, Indiana, in 1962. Located in section of the old Salamonie Shoe Factory, the company invented a high-speed case packer called the Shuttleworth Futurematic Case Packer. This hydraulic case packer placed bottles or cans into cases.

By 1965, the company was licensing the case packers not only in the U.S., but also in Holland, England and Australia. By 1969, they were doing so well that Jim was able to build a new plant in Huntington, which is the Shuttleworth’s manufacturing location in North America.

Throughout the years, the company grew to accommodate a wide variety of material handling needs in the Automotive, Consumer, Electronics, Energy, Food, Healthcare, Industrial and Paper industries. After Jim’s death, Carol Shuttleworth took over the company. Even though Carol had served as Marketing Director for Shuttleworth for many years, she knew it would be a big adjustment.

“It was a challenge, without him, but I had a lot of good people to work with-I think that's key," said Carol Shuttleworth. "I'm a firm believer that you're only as good as the people around you, and I've always been fortunate to have wonderful friends and employees. You have to have people around you that you trust-people that are loyal.” Carol knew she had to make changes and use different approaches, which proved to be vital in maintaining the company’s strong reputation and loyal customer following until she retired in 2011.

In January, 2011, Carol Shuttleworth sold Shuttleworth to Pro Mach, Inc., a leading provider of integrated packaging products and solutions for food, beverage, household goods, pharmaceutical, and other diverse consumer and industrial companies. Pro Mach provides equipment, training, installation, and parts in primary packaging, end-of-line packaging, and identification and tracking. Pro Mach is headquartered in Loveland, Ohio, with manufacturing facilities and offices throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Sustainability

Shuttleworth can help improve throughput, yield, and efficiency metrics in your production cycle.  The gentle handling design of our Slip-Torque technology allows greater flexibility in package design for sustainability. Shuttleworth’s first choice is to handle your product directly on the conveyor surface to eliminate the need for pallets. The lower line pressure associated with Slip-Torque conveyor allows for the reduction of packaging material while delivering a quality product to your downstream operations.

How We Manufacture Our Products
Shuttleworth’s chain drive conveyor is powered by fractional HP motors, typically ¼ - 1/2 HP. Energy efficient options are available for installation on your next automation system:

• High-efficiency Motors
• Electronic vs. Pneumatic Devices

Shuttleworth supports recycling initiatives through the careful selection of our raw materials (various plastic and metal types) to maximize the ability to recycle components.
