James "Bunny" Sansom incorporated Sansom Equipment Company in March of 1987. He started Sansom Equipment Company with a vision of one day being a complete provider for municipalities and industrial contractors for the Southeast.

In 2000, Jeff Cherry and Zane Kilgo purchased Sansom Equipment Company. Their goal was to make his vision a reality. Since then, SEC has become the leader in supplying municipal and contractor equipment to the State of Alabama, State of Mississippi, State of Tennessee, State of Louisiana, and the Panhandle of Florida.

In 2008, SEC launched a satellite office in Mobile, AL to aid in selling and servicing equipment. Their future plans are to have a satellite facility in every State of their territory. In 2013, SEC received the State of Louisiana for New Way Refuse Trucks.
