In July 1986, two business partners Dr. Alvaro Lebrija and Robert C. Kusenberger Sr. acquired Westex Petroleum of Del Rio, Texas. Westex then acquired Pico Propane & Fuels with the expressed intent of becoming a leader throughout West/Central Texas in the fuel distribution industry. They retained the name PICO, and since the word in Spanish means beak of a bird, the group adopted the now-famous Toucan as the company logo. In August 2015, Meritum Energy Holdings, LP (“Meritum”) acquired Pico Petroleum from Westex Capital. Meritum continues to operate the Pico brand and now operates under the name Pico Propane and Fuels. Meritum’s mission is to provide outstanding value, service and support to their full spectrum of customers and employees. Beginning with a broad operating footprint in south Texas backed by the company’s excellent reputation for delivering the highest level of service and safety to its customers, Pico Propane and Fuels has now expanded into new markets throughout Texas and New Mexico and broaden its service offerings in the propane and fuel distribution business.
