Mone Bros are a family run business that has been providing a range of professional services to the construction and utility sectors for over 50 years. Founded in 1965 by brothers Phil, James and John Mone, the business started with humble beginnings from their first depot on Gelderd Road, Gildersome, near Leeds. The original business specialised in the maintenance, repair, hire and operation of plant equipment, supplied to a wide range of private and public sector organisations.

The business continued to grow, largely down to the skills and commitment of the original family members coupled with the opportunities rising from the transformation of Leeds as a city during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Tens of thousands of slum dwellings were replaced by modern housing estates which have since earned Leeds the accolade of Environment City of the UK.

As a result of their success and growth, in 1979 Mone Bros moved to Morley, Leeds which has remained their head office ever since. Soon after, and as part of their diversification into aggregates and stone, Mone Bros acquired Blackhill Quarry, in Bramhope, which had been a quarry since 1930. Today, Blackhill is renowned throughout Leeds and Yorkshire for its quality of stone and tipping services.

In 1987, Mone Bros recognised an opportunity in the marketplace and launched its recycling services from Blackhill Quarry, aimed at reducing the amount of waste its clients sent to landfill. As a result of its success, Mone Bros opened a second recycling depot on Whitehall Road, New Farnley, Leeds during the same year. Whilst originally seen as a ‘shop window’ for Blackhill’s products and service, the Whitehall depot very quickly became a successful business in its own right, largely due to the commitment of its staff, quality of products and transport links.

Both Blackhill and Whitehall have since launched ‘landscaping product display areas’ where both DIY enthusiasts and Landscapers can purchase a wide range of stone, pebbles, sand, gravel, soil, sleepers and garden accessories. Both have been a huge success.

In March 2009, Mone Bros became the first organisation in Yorkshire to produce a recycled TYPE1 to clause 803 with YHAUC approval. TYPE 1, was essentially born from a growing need from customers, mainly in the construction and utility sectors, to use recycled materials. As a result of our success with Recycled TYPE 1, not only have we been able to grow relationships with existing customers, but it has also opened up opportunities to new customers and markets

From our humble beginnings in Leeds, we now employ over 70 staff, supplying a diverse range of equipment and services to the whole of the UK, including: Plant Hire, Recycling, Recycling TYPE 1, Stone Products, Excavations, Quarries, Site Clearance, Waste Disposal & Civil Engineering. Such has been our success at delivering outstanding service, we now work for some of the UKs leading private and public organisations including Carillion plc, Balfour Beatty, Clegg Construction, Interserve, Barhale, Barratt Homes, Persimmon Homes, Yorkshire Water & Leeds City Council

What Does The Future Hold

The last two years have proved a testing one for most within the construction industry, resulting in the best laid plans being put on hold.

For Mone Bros, the future will be about controlling costs and delivering outstanding service to ensure we retain our existing customers. Growth is likely to come from further exploring the opportunities with Recycled TYPE 1 as we feel that we have a fantastic product which has been extremely well received by the market (see our TYPE 1 testimonials).
Recycling in general will continue to be at the fore of Mone Bros business, product and marketing strategy. Through our show-sites in Bramhope and Whitehall, we will be looking to further expand our range of recycled landscaping products, in particular Eco Sands and Eco Gravels.
