Kieswerk Oldis AG was founded in 1963 after some shareholders in Haldenstein had acquired a concession for the extraction of gravel and sand from the Rhine. The founders almost exclusively included construction companies from Graubünden.

Road, bridge, high-voltage line at the expense of Oldis AG

In 1964, the planning of a gravel works with a circular and crushing line and a concrete works was started. The fact that the old covered wooden bridge over the Rhine was unsuitable for truck transport, which is why a service bridge over the Rhine, a 2 km long access road and a high-voltage line to Oldis are being built especially for works traffic and at the expense of the gravel works, was a problem for the future operation of the works had to. Finally, in 1965, the plant could be built and put into operation. 

Material from Maladers As a replacement for the now missing supply of suitcase material from Oldis, a dismantling contract was concluded with the municipality of Maladers in 1974, which was renewed in 2001. Thanks to this, we have been able to continue selling suitcases in the best quality from the large moraine hill "Tuma" below Maladers. However, to a much lesser extent, because of the weight restriction of 18 tons on Schanfiggerstrasse and also handicapped by the winding mountain route. 

Cultivated land is given back to agriculture

The areas that are withdrawn from agriculture for gravel extraction every year are compensated for by backfilling to the same extent on the north side of the quarry pond. As in the past, backfilling will only be carried out with clean excavated material in the future. The surface is then humusized and the property is made available again for agriculture as cultivated land. So far, over 3 hectares of the best arable land have been recultivated. A total of more than ½ million m3 of excavated material could be used.

pavement and concrete On the Kieswerk Oldis AG site, Catram has been operating a bituminous twin mixing plant with an hourly output of a maximum of 200 tons of mix since 1967 and 1973. The mineral components are supplied by the Oldis gravel works. 

The modernization continues

Replacement and modernization investments

Since the start of operations, replacement and modernization investments have been made on an ongoing basis. Nonetheless, in 1997, after a precise assessment and assessment of the entire plant, machinery and building, including an analysis of weak points and replacement requirements for the plants, some of which no longer meet today's requirements, a 4-year investment program was drawn up. So from autumn 1997 we planned a new modern round gravel processing, which was installed from mid-December to early February 1998, or existing systems were converted and adapted.

goals : In 1999 a modern chippings processing plant was built with an increase in output of 40% and a qualitatively better sieving including defoliation. The new treatment was also clad to protect against wind and dust formation and the area was provided with hard surfaces and drainage. At the same time as the construction of the new chippings plant, the dry storage of crushed sand required by the civil engineering office and the Catram was implemented and a 3,500 m3 crushed sand silo was built with a new 47 m long conveyor bridge from the crushed stone processing to the silo center.

In 2000, as a thank you for our efforts, we were able to receive the certificate according to ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management from the certification body SGS-ICS.
