About Company

Highland collects landfill gas produced in landfills and converts the gas into environmental and economic benefits. It can create these benefits in a number of ways.

The collected landfill gas can be utilized as a fuel to produce green renewable energy.
The landfill gas can be processed and purified to upgrade to pipeline quality (i.e. natural gas), thus creating “renewable natural gas”.
The landfill gas can be utilized directly by an industrial host as fuel to augment or replace fossil fuels.
Landfill gas can be upgraded to pipeline quality natural gas, compressed and utilized as vehicle fuel.

Highland's areas of expertise

Site assessment and evaluation of a potential landfill gas project development
Contract negotiations in creating agreements specific to acquiring the right to utilize landfill gas
Contract negotiations specific to power purchase agreements with end users (normally utilities)
Design and construction of landfill gas collection systems
Design and construction of landfill gas to energy power plants
Permitting required to implementing landfill gas collection systems and landfill gas utilization systems
Daily operations, maintenance and management of landfill gas collection systems and landfill gas utilization systems

International experience

Highland has conducted feasibility assessments for potential landfill gas projects in: Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Mexico and the Philippines.

Landfill gas is created in landfills when the organic material decomposes. One of the main components of this gas is carbon dioxide (CO2).

CO2 is a common man-made gas and the major contributor to global warming. The other principle component of landfill gas is methane (CH4), a colorless, odourless and highly explosive gas. Methane has 21 times the global warming capacity of carbon dioxide. One of the major sources or methane released from human activities originates from municipal solid waste landfills.

Responsible waste management requires a long term commitment.
A landfill can generate up to 125 cubic meters (m3) of methane per tonne of waste over a period of 10 to 40 years.

Landfill gas collection systems

Highland has the knowledge, expertise and experience to analyze, assess and implement landfill gas projects that will provide environmental solutions as well as economic benefits to all concerned.
The major factor in determining the success or failure of any landfill gas project regardless of the application is the design, construction and day to day management of an efficient landfill gas collection system. Many landfill gas projects under perform or fail because of a lack of knowledge of how to maximize the landfill gas flow to produce a sufficient quantity and quality to insure the success of a project.

At Highland, we have been directly involved in the assessment, design, construction and day to day operations and management of landfill gas collection systems since 1995.

We pride ourselves on our technical knowledge and ability to create innovative solutions to any problems that can hamper the quality and quantity of gas being delivered to the project. We are continuously innovating and creating solutions to the challenges that arise.
