OUR HISTORY - 50 YEARS OF CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT AND SUCCESS

In 1968 at the age of 23, Jim DeBlasio started a one-man machine shop, Gayle Manufacturing and Machine Company. The Sacramento, California company provided machine shop services, tool and die work, punch press and light production manufacturing. By 1974 the business had grown to 55 employees and was oriented to the manufacture and supply of industrial sheet metal products and systems.

By 1980 the firm had completed a number of large industrial projects across the country. The main thrust of work was engineered systems for bulk storage and material handling. At the time, GMC provided turnkey projects for cement plants, rice mills, grain terminals and aggregate plants. A severe recession developed in the industrial markets in 1983 and GMC looked to other sources of business for the new facilities in Woodland, California.

In 1984 GMC sold its first commercial structural steel project. The facility and equipment was well-suited for the work, but the plant had no automated structural steel equipment or systems. DeBlasio's background as a machinist and tool designer provided him with the experience and insight to develop innovative technical solutions for manufacturing structural steel. DeBlasio purchased and installed various large state of the art automated machines and developed manufacturing techniques resulting in year on year productivity gains. GMC proceeded to fabricate and erect structural steel on a large quantity of commercial office buildings between 1984 and 1997, with exceptional performance.

In 1997, using nearly 30 years of manufacturing experience, DeBlasio designed and built a second fabrication plant in Nampa, Idaho. That facility and equipment significantly expanded GMC's capability and volume of producing structural steel. Between 1997 and 2007, GMC honed its operations and expertise in managing, fabricating, and erecting large complex projects. GMC fabricated and erected various complex, large projects including hospitals, high rises, airport terminals, university campus buildings, and commercial office buildings for the hightech industry.

In 2007, GMC became a 100% Employee Stock Owned Plan Company with Jim DeBlasio still heavily involved in the company. This move further solidified the committment and engagment of GMC's highly experienced and motivated Employees towards the continual improvement and growth of the company. Between 2007 and today, GMC has fabricated and erected large complicated flagship projects including the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center, Samsung USA Headquarters, San Jose Airport Terminal B/North concourse, and large campuses for the second tech boom. GMC reached its 50 year milestone in business in 2018, having successfully fabricated and erected more than 700 projects.

In 2018, GMC completed its new Caldwell, ID facility. This large world class facility sits on a 50 acre site and is equipped with heavy state of the art equipment. Utilizing over 50 years of experience, Jim DeBlasio and the GMC Employees designed and built this facility to very efficiently fabricate heavy structural steel for the largest complex buildings and structures in the California and North West high seismic regions. This new facility is now fully operational, fabricating large projects including Uber Headquarters, Chase Event Center Office Towers, and Google Campuses.

Today, GMC is a leader in its industry, equipped with exceptional facilities and personnel that excel at providing structural steel with the highest level of service, expertise, and performance. GMC continues to grow, innovate, and outperform on its projects.
