We have to work at it. But it’s what we do. And it’s what we must do. We started this business in 1986 with our facility in San Angelo. Two years later, we opened our additional location in Midland. Our first year, we serviced baled cardboard customers from San Angelo to Amarillo and we recycled 1680 tons of fiber. From that beginning, we have helped many more cities with their vision of going green and last year we recycled 7200 tons. We are family owned and operated and our primary areas of recycling are fibers: cardboard, newspaper, magazines, office and mixed paper. Additionally we recycle aluminum cans and #1 and #2 plastics which are chiefly drink bottles. It’s a conscious decision to do the right thing that as individuals we all must make. Reduce, reuse, recycle. They can just be words or they can be the way we truly treat our environment. We here at Butts Recycling are here to assist in the process.
Recycling Facts By recycling one ton of PAPER, you save: 17 trees 6,953 gallons of water 463 gallons of oil 587 pounds of air pollution 3.07 cubic yards of landfill space 4,077 kilowatt hours of energy (Sources: Worldwatch Institute, Pulp & Paper International, International Institute for Environment and Development) ALUMINUM Making cans from recycled aluminum cuts related air pollution (for example, sulfur dioxides, which create acid and rain) by 95%. Americans throw away enough aluminum every three months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet. A quarter of all aluminum goes into packaging. The all-aluminum can was introduced in 1964. A paper grocery sack holds about 1.5 pounds of empty aluminum cans. (Source: The EarthWorks Group Recycler’s Handbook.) PLASTIC More than 2.4 billion pounds of plastic bottles were recycled in 2008. Although the amount of plastic bottles recycled in the U.S. has grown every year since 1990, the actual recycling rate remains steady at around 27 percent.
