 We have developed a state-of-the-art, 650,000-tonne low-carbon recycled aluminum flat rolled mill, supported by two satellite recycled aluminum slab centers, one completed and the second under development.

Our History

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI), founded in 1993, has grown from a single steel mill in Butler, Indiana, into one of the most respected and diversified steel producers in the united states.

Known for its innovation, efficiency, and commitment to sustainability, SDI has become a leader in the metals industry, pioneering the use of the “mini mill” model. This approach allowed SDI to produce steel more cost-effectively by using electric arc furnaces to melt recycled scrap rather than relying on the traditional blast furnace method. This innovation enabled SDI to compete with larger, integrated steel producers and rapidly expand its market presence.

SDI’s reputation in the industry is built on its ability to deliver high-quality products while maintaining a focus on operational excellence and environmental responsibility. The acquisition and integration of OmniSource, one of the largest metals recycling companies in North America, further strengthened SDI’s business model by ensuring a steady, sustainable supply of scrap metal. OmniSource now plays a critical role in supporting Aluminum Dynamics, our newest venture into the aluminum sector.

With the establishment of Aluminum Dynamics, SDI has applied its metals manufacturing expertise to the production of premium recycled aluminum. Located in Columbus, Mississippi, our state-of-the-art rolling facility is designed to produce low-carbon flat-rolled aluminum products.
