Tom Sprague

President of A-1 Precision, Inc.

I started learning the machinist trade in 1973 from my father, who founded A-1 Precision, Inc. He taught me many things in those days, including how to run turret lathes and bridgeport style mills. I married my wife, Sue, in June of 1977, and our first child, Jill, was born the following year in October, 1978. In 1979 A-1 Precision purchased its first CNC Machining Center, which I subsequently learned to program and operate. In 1980, our first son, Jamie, arrived as an early Christmas present, born on Christmas Eve. As business conditions continued to expand and evolve, we added a CNC lathe in 1981.

By the mid-90s, the company continued to grow. In 1995 we added our first CNC Horizontal Machining Center. My father was preparing to retire, and not coincidentally, I started managing more of the day-to-day business operations. On January 1, 1998, another big milestone for A-1 Precision: my father fully transitioned into retirement and I took over full ownership of the family business. Not long after, Sue and I wanted more children, so on March 31, 1998 we added our second son, Tyler, to our family.

Looking back on what feels like 25 short years of going from deburring to President, I have continued to expand the business with state of the art equipment and highly skilled machinists. Since becoming President, we have added or replaced CNC turning and milling centers with more modern equipment. In 2004, my son Jamie joined the company. Jamie started purchasing material and overseeing our ISO program. On 8/17/2006, we were proud to earn ISO 9001-2000 certification. In 2005, we took another big step and entered the Cell system world of CNC machining Centers. With Jamie on board, I know that someday I will be able to retire, and as my father did, I can entrust my son to manage this special business that has blessed our family over the years.

On a more personal note, I like to go to Maui and Florida as often as possible. I love to play golf when I can get away from the office. I am also something of an inventor. In 1995, I received a patent on the “Precision Putter,” which is a unique putter with interchangeable backs to change the look and feel to any green.
