Turkish scrap imports up 7% during first two months of 2014

ANKARA (Scrap Monster): The most recent data published by the Turkish Iron & Steel Producers Association indicates that the scrap imports by the country were up 7% during the initial two-month period of the year. This is when compared with the imports during the corresponding two-month period in 2013.

Turkey’s scrap imports during Jan to Feb ’14 totaled 2.98 million tonnes. The value of exports totaled 1.17 billion. The scrap import value jumped 5.8% over the previous year. The scrap imports by the country from the US totaled 667,000 tonnes, 25.8% lower when compared with the previous year. The imports from CIS countries surged 150% over the previous year to 507,000 tonnes. The scrap imports from the EU region rose 9.3% over the year to 1.58 million tonnes during Jan-Feb ’14.

According to data, Turkey’s domestic scrap supply volumes were down 13.1% to 1.70 million tonnes. The scrap consumption by the country was down 1.5% year-on-year to 4.68 million tonnes. The scrap consumption by country’s electric arc furnaces (EAFs) totaled 4.29 million tonnes and those by blast furnaces totaled 387,000 tonnes.
