Thailand's scrap imports fell sharply in June '14

BEIJING (Scrap Monster): The latest import statistics indicate that the scrap imports by Thailand during June this year rose marginally over the year. However, the scrap imports witnessed a sharp decline when compared with the imports during the previous month.

The scrap imports by Thailand during the month of June this year totaled 102,527 tons. The imports jumped higher by 11.3% when compared with the scrap imports during the same month a year ago. However, the scrap imports plunged 39.8% over the previous month. Thailand had imported 170,316 tons of scrap during the month of May this year. This the first time in three months that the country’s scrap imports have posted decline.

The largest scrap exporter to Thailand during June ’14 was Australia. The scrap imports by Thailand from Australia totaled 36,115 tons. The scrap imports from Australia accounted for over 35% of the total scrap imports by Thailand during the month. The scrap exports from Australia to Thailand declined sharply by 39.24% during June ‘14 when compared with the imports during May ’14.

The second largest scrap exporter to Thailand during the month was the US. The imports from the US totaled 28,391 tons, accounting for nearly 28% of the total scrap imports by the country during the month.

The country’s scrap imports during initial six months of the year totaled 550,900 tons. The scrap imports were 23.3% higher upon comparison with the imports during the corresponding six-month period last year.

The scrap imports by Thailand are projected to touch 1.1.02 million tons during the entire year 2014.
