Minnesota metal recycler commits to reduce air pollution

MINNEAPOLIS (Scrap Monster): The Northeast Minneapolis-based Alliance Recycling Group has entered into an agreement with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to reduce the quantity of emission of dust and other pollutants at their facility near the Lowry Avenue Bridge. The two sides have agreed upon the immediate steps of actions to be undertaken by the company to curb pollutants leaving the property.

The MPCA authorities applauded the company authorities for taking proactive step to co-operate with it, rather than waiting for the authority to take action. MPCA Land and Air Compliance Section Manager Sarah Kilgriff noted that the company has set a great example, which other companies are expected to follow. MPCA Commissioner John Linc Stine observed that the steps outlined in the agreement may not be adequate to completely resolve the air quality challenges. However, the action by the company is considered as a big step forward in the right direction. Alliance Recycling Group is one among several companies that cause air pollution in the region. Most businesses have been open to discuss the matter, but Alliance is the first company to sign an agreement, Stine noted.

Meantime, Larry Zweigbaum, Alliance Recycling Group’s environmental officer stated that the agreement with MPCA will make it a better company and would result in more air pollution protection for its customers. He noted that its negotiation with the agency was constructive, honest and productive. The agreement highlights the company’s commitment to provide the highest level of pollution protection for its workers, customers and neighbors of the industrial area, Zweigbaum added.

As per the agreement, the company will take several new measures to contain particulate emissions to nearby areas. Alliance has agreed to expand the sweeping of paved areas. Instead of dropping the recyclable materials, the facility will make use of railcars. It will also avoid pounding of materials in railcars.
