Large fire rages in Columbus recycling center

COLUMBUS, OHIO (AP) -- Firefighters were struggling to douse a large commercial warehouse fire in south Columbus producing a plume of smoke visible for miles.

Crews responded shortly after 4 p.m. Friday to the blaze at Columbus Pallet Recycling. Officials said one-third to one-half of the city's firefighters were battling the fire, which was still raging more than three hours after it was reported.

No injuries have been reported. Some roads have been closed in the area, and thousands of nearby residents were without power. About 100 people were working at the business when the fire started.

The fire produced a large black mushroom cloud visible from downtown Columbus and spreading miles to the southeast. The smoke is not believed to be toxic.
