KFS signs MoU with Canada on forest co-operation

VANCOUVER (Scrap Monster): The Korea Forest Service (KFS) intends to expand its global presence by partnering with Canada. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between KFS and the Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources last week in Ottawa. The agreement will pave way for KFS to concentrate more on tie-ups with developed countries.

Till date, KFS has been focused on working with developing countries. It had recently entered into partnership with Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development towards restoration of Algeria’s forests and modernization of green parks. It had also tied up with Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations to promote reforestation efforts in Northern Africa.

As the next step towards implementation of the forest co-operation, Canadian Forest Service assistant deputy minister Glenn Mason will visit Korea next month. The two countries are expected to begin joint research on forest carbon emission. Canada will also send team of top-level forest experts to the sixth International Wildland Fire Conference which is scheduled to be held in Korea next year.

Incidentally, the Free Trade Agreement between Korea and Canada is expected to come into effect early next year. This should further boost the economic ties between the two nations.
