Indonesia's scrap imports dropped 18% during Jan-Oct '14

JAKARTA (Scrap Monster): According to recent government statistics, Indonesian scrap imports declined significantly during the initial ten months of the previous year. The country’s scrap imports declined almost 18% during this period.

The country’s imports of scrap totaled 1.69 million tons during the period from January to October last year, 18.2% down when compared with the imports during the corresponding ten-month period a year ago. The imports had totaled 2.07 million tons during the ten-month period from January to October in 2013. The monthly scrap imports by Indonesia averaged at 169,000 tons per month.

Indonesia’s scrap imports totaled 184,000 tons during the month of October 2014 alone. This is 4.4% higher when compared with the imports of 176,240 tons recorded during October 2013.

The largest scrap exporter to Indonesia during the October 2014 was Brazil. The scrap imports by Indonesia from Brazil totaled 43,000 tons, accounting for almost one-fourth of the total scrap imports by the country during the month. The second largest exporter was Singapore with 29,000 tons.

The total scrap imports by Indonesia are expected to be around 2.03 million tons during the entire year 2014, lower when compared with the total yearly import during 2013.Indonesia’s scrap imports had surged higher by 23.4% year-on-year to total 2.4 million tons in 2013.
