RICHMOND (Scrap Monster): Goochland County residents can now drop off their unwanted electronic items at the Western and Central Convenience Centers. Both these collection centers will also accept plastic bags for recycling.
According to the announcement, the accepted electronic items include Computers and Accessories, Computer systems, Laptop, notebook computers, Printers, scanners, copiers, Monitors, Keyboards, mice, speakers, etc., External memory, hard disk drives, Circuit boards, chips, Network hubs, routers, CDs, DVDs, magnetic tape, Toner cartridges, Office and Business Equipment, Copiers, Cell phones and chargers, PDAs , other hand-held devices, Telephone telecommunications/ switching system, Household Items, Button batteries , Televisions and Stereos. However, consumer electronic items including small appliances such as toasters, blenders, hair dryers, vacuums, etc will not be accepted.
Expansion of the recycling program will help the County to reduce the materials reaching landfills. The electronic goods collected under the program will be disassembled and recycled by authorized centers in full compliance with the US EPA standards. Consumers can also request for documentation of data destruction for an additional fee of $5.
Also, the plastic bags collected will be temporarily stored at Food Lion grocery stores, from where it will be transported to a company that manufactures plastic decking material. The program will accept any clean and dry grocery, bread, newspaper or packaging film or dry cleaning bags.
These new programs are in addition to the existing recycling programs, announced the County website.
