Domtar and Resolute wins 'Safest Mills in Canada' contest-2013

VANCOUVER (Scrap Monster): The Pulp & Paper Canada’s ‘Safest Mills in Canada’ contest for the year 2013 was won by Domtar and Resolute Forest Products. The awards, as usual, were categorized into different classes based on threshold man-hours per month.

In Class-A category, for mills exceeding 80,000 man-hours per month, Domtar’s Pulp & Paper Mill, Windsor, Que. won top honors. In 2013, the mill achieved a recordable incident frequency of 0.93 for 1,497,485 hours. Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries was ranked second in this category.

In Class-B category, for mills that record between 50,000 and 80,000 man-hours per month, Resolute Forest Products’ Thunder Bay, Ont. facility was ranked top. In 2013, the facility achieved a recordable incident frequency of 0.94 on 850,544 man-hours last year. Weyerhaeuser’s Grande Prairie site took second place in this category. Ranked third was Resolute Forest Products’ Alma, Que. facility.

Resolute’s Amos mill, in Quebec was the winner in Class-C category mills that operate less than 50,000 man-hours per month. The facility achieved zero recordable incidents over a period of 334,791 manhours in 2013. The second and third place went to Resolute’s Thorold, Ont., site and Sonoco Canada Corp. in Brantford, Ont., which also recorded zero recordable incidents.
