Call2Recycle reports robust growth in battery recycling rates in 2015

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Atlanta-based Call2Recycle has reported significant improvement to battery recycling rates during the current year. According to the battery stewardship organization, over 5.7 million pounds of used batteries have been recycled in the US and Canada so far this year. Further, battery collection is all set to report nineteenth straight year of growth in 2015, Call2Recycle noted.

There are nearly 34,000 public drop-off facilities across the US and Canada. Statistics indicate that almost 90% of the population has access to one of these drop-off locations within 10 kilometres from their residence. This has contributed to significant growth in battery collection rates.

The combined battery recycling rate in the US and Canada has grown almost 6% in 2015 when compared with the previous year. Within the US, western states, northern plains and the Great Lakes region reported 11% growth year-on-year. In Canada, highest growth was reported in British Columbia, where collection grew 19%. Ontario too reported 7% growth in battery recycling rates during 2015.

The strategic partnership with like-minded organizations has helped to create increased levels of consumer-awareness. Efforts by these partners, coupled with dedicated efforts from municipalities, retailers and product manufacturers have led to rise in recycling rates in the US and Canada, noted Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle.

Call2Recycle is a product stewardship program providing no-cost battery and cellphone recycling solutions across the U.S. and Canada. Operated by Call2Recycle, Inc., a 501(c)4 nonprofit public service organization, the program is funded by battery and product manufacturers committed to responsible recycling. Founded in 1994, Call2Recycle operates North America’s first and largest consumer battery stewardship program.
