With thousands of active participants in 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, Shelter Alliance is now the largest cell phone recycling program in the United States. Our participants have earned over $15 million since 2001.When we began our mission in 2001, we discovered that cell phone “fundraising” revenue was primarily funneled to national nonprofits, often leaving local organizations without their due share. Additionally, we found that large surpluses of phones often resulted from “911 emergency phone collections,” leaving social service organizations with offices full of phones and no responsible recycling solution. Shelter Alliance was established to offer local community organizations a viable, profitable fundraising option. Years later, we still hold true to our “founding principles”: accountability, individualized attention to each participant, and responsiveness.Shelter Alliance offers collection programs for organizations, cell phone donation programs for businesses and individuals, and a unique community service program for students.

 Zero Landfill Environmental Policy

• Approximately 60% of recycled cell phones have resale value as refurbished cell phones. Through our Reuse program, Shelter Alliance distributes cell phones to wireless markets worldwide in need of affordable communication. The reuse of used electronics is applauded by many environmentalists as an essential step in the electronics recycling process.
• Approximately 40% of recycled cell phones do not have resale value, and are processed through our environmentally responsible “Refining” program. Through the Refining program, phones are shredded and smelted at our copper refiner, and various metals are “reclaimed” back to their natural state. This process, often referred to as “above ground mining”, is applauded by many environmentalists as an essential step in the replenishment of our natural resources.

Shelter Alliance (EPA SITE ID # FLR000177725) has established a socially responsible, zero landfill environmental policy. Our policies are highlighted by the following:

• ZERO LANDFILL FOR ALL WASTE: No products of any kind processed through our recycling facility will be sent to solid waste landfills.
• FULL COMPLIANCE, FLORIDA HAZARDOUS & UNIVERSAL WASTE REGULATIONS. Site inspection was performed at the Shelter Alliance Recycling facility by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
• NO E-WASTE REFINED IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: No wireless e-waste (non-working handsets, batteries, and accessories) will be refined in developing countries. Shelter Alliance will make every conceivable effort to ensure that all downstream refining operations meet all applicable environmental regulations.
• RECHARGEABLE BATTERY RECYCLING: Batteries are processed according to EPA guidelines for the proper disposal and recycling of rechargeable batteries.
