Developed by the Basel Action Network, the e-Stewards Standard designates responsible recycling and reuse of electronic equipment. It is an industry-specific environmental management system standard that is the basis for the e-Stewards Initiative.

The certification is available to qualified green electronics recyclers and refurbishers. Organizations go through a thorough audit in many different stages to achieve an e-Stewards certification. Even after passing the first round of audits and given E-Stewards acceptance, surveillance audits take place annually to ensure organizations adhere to all standards and have a current, registered ISO 14001 environmental management system in operation. In addition, numerous performance requirements including the guarantee of no exporting of hazardous electronic waste to developing countries, no use of prison labor and no dumping of toxic materials in municipal landfills.
