About Yard

C&S Waste Solutions is an independently owned family of solid waste and recycling companies operating in California and Nevada.

Keeping Recyclables Clean

Our priority is to increase recycling and divert more material from landfill. When recyclables are processed at our recycling facility, they pass over screens and conveyors, where human hands and valuable machinery sort the materials. Contaminants may result in injury to our employees, equipment breakdown, or rejection of recyclables by processors. For these reasons, there should be no food waste or household garbage in the recycle carts. Containers must be empty with no residual food. Recyclables should fit loosely in the cart so that the cart can empty freely into the collection truck. The exception to this rule is shredded paper, which should be placed in clear plastic bags and tied.We actively campaign to keep recyclables clean and free of contamination. Our recycling program includes the distribution of educational materials to our customers, presentations to schools and civic organizations, participation at community fairs, free business waste assessments, curbside cart "audits", non-collection of contaminated carts and, ultimately, additional charges to customers who continue to put contaminated materials in their recycling carts. Contamination is a serious issue, and we do appreciate your efforts to keep the recycling clean.

C&S Waste Solutions is a fully integrated family of companies with decades of experience operating in all aspects of solid waste management. We are pleased to offer cost-effective programs which address the unique local issues facing each community. The owners and operators of the company offer a combined experience of over 65 years in all aspects of solid waste management.

History

The Beginning
In 1997, childhood friends, Dave Carroll and John Shea, formed a business partnership in the solid waste industry that developed from years of literally "growing up" in the business. Not only did John and Dave grow up living across the street from each other as kids, but their family backgrounds were owning and operating solid waste collection, recycling and landfill companies. Needless to say, each of them spent their school summers working in various aspects of these family enterprises. The result of this experience and friendship was invaluable, as they developed an appreciation for every job in the industry and mutual respect for one another. Upon graduation from college, Dave and John immediately assumed managerial roles in the industry, but their ultimate goal was to build their own business. In 1997 they received that opportunity and have been growing their business ever since.

A Brother and Childhood Friend Become Partners
As Dave and John's business grew, their need for more talented individuals grew. They had to find people they could trust and respect. The individuals had to have a good understanding of the industry and the people that worked in the industry.
Damon Shea initially pursued success in the accounting field before returning to the solid waste industry, which he had learned so well growing up. Damon was the best choice to join his brother in growing and managing his businesses in Nevada. Nevada was a familiar place to Damon, since he attended college at the University of Nevada, Reno while earning All-American honors in football. His involvement has proven critical to the ongoing success in Nevada.
When Dave and John decided to expand into California, they acquired a company that was operated by Bruce McCracken. Over 30 years ago, Bruce was a childhood friend and neighbor to Dave, John and Damon. Bruce began his career in the industry during his high school summer vacations. He began full-time work as a route collector shortly after graduation. Within two (2) years, he was promoted to a managerial position. Since then, Bruce has participated in every aspect of the business and gained invaluable experience. He now leads the California operations.
It is rare to find four individuals that have known each other since childhood, lived on the same street growing up, followed separate but similar paths, and ultimately ended up together. Dave, John, Damon and Bruce have formed a partnership that is based on long-standing trust and friendship, tremendous respect, and admiration for one another. They consider each other and their employees as family members. The operators and employees of C&S Waste Solutions live and work in the communities they serve, and place high value on the trust placed in them by customers. They know the communities and market they serve. Superior customer service, a commitment to their employees and to the communities they serve is their highest priority.

Business Philosophy
Dave, John, Damon, and Bruce have seen tremendous changes in solid waste management during their lifetime of involvement in the industry. When they started their company, they realized that even more changes would be necessary if the environmental challenges were to be met and solved. They embraced innovation, new technology, flexibility, and "pushing the envelope" as an integral part of their business. These are the pathways to make environmental sustainability an everyday occurrence for the people and communities served by C&S Waste Solutions.

Modern Approaches
The owners and operators of C&S Waste Solutions are constantly searching to enhance their integrated operations with modernized equipment and technology training of employees. Modernized equipment, such as split body collection trucks, offers environmental advantages to communities. Technologically advanced systems, such as computerized work orders, dispatching, tracking, and accounting systems assure timely delivery of services in meeting the unique needs of customers.

Customer Service
As the company grows, whether by acquisition or internal growth, the principal focus will remain to expand all levels of customer service in cost-effective ways.

Contamination - Why is it important?

Recyclables are the "raw materials" used to make new products. Your recyclables are processed at our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where human hands and complex machinery sort them. But first, your recyclables and your neighbor's recyclables are collected in trucks that compact the material before being delivered to the MRF. When the truck unloads at the facility, your neighbor's jar of tomato sauce has broken and spilled onto the clean recyclables in the load, spreading the contamination. These contaminated materials must now be separated from the clean recyclables and sent to landfill. The recyclables enter the mechanical system, passing over a series of conveyors where the sorting crew picks through the materials with their hands. Even wearing protective gear, sharp objects such as knives and needles can injure workers. The recyclables continue their journey across a screen containing rotating rubber disks. Plastic bags, tarps and garden hoses can get wrapped around the disks and shut down the system until the materials can be removed and the equipment repaired. Our crew has to work even harder to keep these items from reaching the screens. Finally, each sorted material is compacted into large bales and shipped to processors who will make the materials into new products. Bales are scrutinized thoroughly by vendors, who can charge a hefty fee or even reject entire loads that contain contamination. Revenues received from selling recyclables help offset some of the cost of garbage collection, a benefit to all our customers, so it is important that we are able to produce clean materials for our vendors. There should be no food waste or household garbage in the recycle carts. Containers must be empty with no residual food. Recyclables must not be bagged and everything should fit loosely in the cart so that the cart can empty freely into the collection truck. The exception to this rule is shredded paper, which should be placed in clear plastic bags and tied.We actively campaign to keep recyclables clean and free of contamination. Our recycling program includes the distribution of educational materials to our customers, presentations to schools and civic organizations, participation at community fairs, free waste assessments for businesses, curbside cart "audits", non-collection of contaminated carts and, ultimately, additional charges to customers who continue to put contaminated materials in recycling carts. Contamination is a serious issue, and we do appreciate your efforts to keep the recycling clean.
