How to Recycle

Remember the three R’s of recycling-reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Reduce: Pay attention to packaging. Manufacturers try fancy packaging to attract attention. If consumers are more cautious in their purchases, manufacturers would be forced to make changes. Avoid packaging with excess plastic, Styrofoam and cardboard.

Reuse: Some containers can be used over and over again. Donate clothes and house hold appliances. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

Recycle: It just makes sense!

  • Try setting up a small recycling center at your home.
  • Have separate bins for HI 5 plastic, glass and aluminum, this makes it easier when it's time to drop off items.
  • Create your own recycle bin
  • Remove lids and empty containers. Rinse with water to avoid insects.
  • Glass is easiest to bring in to redemption centers in cans or buckets. If you use trash bags, please do not over fill where there is a risk of the bag breaking.

Why should you recycle?

Recycling saves energy, natural resources and landfill space. By recycling, we help the environment and save the land for future generations.

Items do not disappear once they are land filled. It takes aluminum 90 years to decompose, plastic 700 and glass one million years. Instead, we can recycle these items and save resources.

Making aluminum cans from recycled aluminum saves 95% of the energy that would have been used by making them from raw material. Every recycled can saves enough energy to light at 100-watt light bulb for FOUR hours.

Using recycled glass to make new glass cuts water pollution by 50%. Every item recycled helps to reduce air pollution and save resources.

Recycling one ton of cardboard saves 17 trees, 7000 gallons of water and 3 cubic yards of landfill space.

Don’t forget about the money! Each time you purchase a beverage container, you give the state your money to hold. By recycling, you get that money back. Every 20 containers equal $1.00. Just think of how much bottled water, soda and beer each household consumes. A family of four might each have two drinks a day. That equals $12 every month. Get your money back. You deserve it.

What happens to recycled items

  • Aluminum is baled and shipped to California. From there it is sent to a Midwest manufacturer of new cans.

  • Plastic bottles (PET) are sent to China where they are used to make carpet. They can also be used for many things including sleeping bag filler. It takes only 36 two liter bottles to fill one sleeping bag.

  • Glass is shipped to Oakland where it is sorted by color and melted down to make new bottles and jars.

  • Cardboard is made into things like egg cartons or more cardboard.

  • HDPE plastic (#2) is used to make plastic lumber.
