Where did it all begin?

Air Cycle Corporation was founded in 1978 and is currently based in the Chicago metropolitan area. Over the years, we have manufactured a variety of products, including "Automatic Air Balance System" control panels for McDonald's restaurants (found in over 3000 locations), electronic lamp ballasts for specialty markets, and advanced coffee dispensing machines.Through involvement in the lighting industry, Air Cycle identified the need for make packaging spent fluorescent lamps easy and efficient. As legislation was passed to reduce pollution from irresponsible lamp disposal, we designed a machine to meet the lamp recycling needs of facilities worldwide. On March 15, 1999, the Model 55 VRS Bulb Eater® was introduced at the National Plant Engineering Trade Show, at which the Bulb Eater® was named one of the 17 "Show Stoppers" out of over 700 exhibitors!

Based on this initial success and the attention garnered through a front page acknowledgement by the Wall Street Journal, we focused our energies on developing a national network of recycling facilities to service our growing customer base. That network has expanded over the years and currently provides logistics and recycling services for crushed and/or intact lamps, batteries, ballasts, and electronic waste to thousands of facilities nationwide. In 2006, Air Cycle developed the EasyPak™ prepaid mail-back recycling program and launched LampRecycling.com as an alternative recycling solution for our customers who wanted to recycle lamps and store a minimum amount of lamp, ballast, battery, and electronic waste on-site.In 2012, Air Cycle began to offer the EnviroPure food waste diversion system, and launched the latest advancement in mail-back lamp recycling technology, EasyPak™ VaporShield® pre-paid lamp recycling containers. In 2014, Air Cycle introduced the next generation lamp crusher, The Bulb Eater® 3 with Intelli Technology®.

Why Air Cycle?

We are firm believers that the key to effective environmental programs is education. At Air Cycle, we work on a daily basis to accomplish three things:

  • Build awareness as to how green programs can help protect the environment and benefit facilities, and what the consequences are for improperly disposing of waste from both an environmental and regulatory perspective.

  • Provide quality services to enable efficient sustainability practices at facilities, and to properly recycle wastes.

  • Provide reliable products that help make green programs and recycling as easy and cost-effective as possible.

Why Recycle?

Legal Requirements:

Many states require lamp recycling and proper disposal of ballasts, batteries, and electronic waste by law. Make sure you are compliant with your state regulations. For official guidance and other tools and resources regarding lamp regulations and recycling, please visit the federal EPA fluorescent lamp website.

The Environment:

Fluorescent lamps contain mercury, and ballasts, batteries, and electronic waste can contain mercury, lead, metals, and other materials which have a harmful effect on the environment if not recycled.

Recycling is Cost Effective:

Over the lifecycle of a fluorescent lamp, the cost to recycle is less than 1% of the cost of ownership. Recycling your lamps and obtaining a certificate of recycling is also a guaranteed way to avoid fines and costly enforcement action which can easily exceed the cost of lamp recycling.

Recycling is a Green Idea:

Implementing a lamp, ballast, battery, or electronics recycling program is a simple and practical way to "green" your organization and benefit from resulting positive PR. Recycling universal waste can earn your facility LEED points too.

You Can Make a Difference:

Recycling your lamps and other universal waste is the right thing to do! As the saying goes "every little bit counts" and keeping hazardous waste out of our landfills and reusing natural resources is a big step towards a sustainable world.

Universal Waste Nationwide Recycling Network

Air Cycle has partnered with permitted recycling facilities across the Unites States to recycle waste from Bulb Eater® drums of crushed lamps, bulk pickups of waste, and EasyPak™ recycling containers. All Bulb Eater® drums, palletized boxes of waste, and EasyPak™ recycling containers are shipped to one of these facilities where the material is recycled safely, responsibly, and efficiently.

Recycling Lamps - How Your Lamps Get Recycled

  • Upon arrival at the recycling facility, lamps are removed from their containers and fed into specialized machine for recycling lamps. The entire process is fully automatic and incorporated in a container in which the air is brought to subpressure, thereby preventing mercury from being released into the environment.
  • With the aid of a sophisticated patented air transportation system, the phosphor powder is separated in different steps from the glass and metal by-products.
  • Clean glass and aluminum end-caps are sparated and stored for re-use.
  • The mercury bearing powder is collected in distiller barrels beneath the cyclone and the self-cleansing dust filters
  • The powder is then retorted to drive out the mercury.
  • At the end of the process the glass, metal end-caps, powder, and mercury can all be re-used.
  • Once the materials have been fully processed by the recycling facility, an official Certificate of Recycling will be produced and emailed to you for record keeping.
